Gay black civil rights leaders

Black queer and trans political leaders have long been at the forefront of achieving progress and securing human rights. I don't think most people know that, but if they had a chance to look through his files and papers, they would see very organized, detailed, and geometric doodles that he used to do on correspondence that he received, or memos, notes, or schedules.

A politician, sociologist, feminist, and human rights activist, Marielle Franco was a key leader of human rights movements in Brazil. Because we shared a set of values and ideals, we were very compatible as a couple. She was a leader in the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first lesbian civil and political rights organization in the United States.

Bayard was a very creative person. There are a lot of little personal details: the way he dressed, the way he carried himself, the things he liked to eat. Throughout her career, she worked for multiple civil society organizations and served as one of the only openly Black LGBTQ members on the Rio de Janeiro City Council, where she chaired the Women’s Defense Council.

So I had a good sense of who he was, what he stood for. He sang at demonstrations and used his voice as a way to bring people together, or to move through a particularly difficult moment in a demonstration. She attended "Annual Reminder" picket protests and was frequently one of the only women — and the only Black woman — present at early LGBTQ+ rights protests.

We looked at each other and started talking. Bayard's name was always one that I came across when I read about these things. Throughout her career, she worked for multiple civil society organizations and served as one of the only openly Black LGBTQ members on the Rio de Janeiro City Council, where she chaired the Women’s Defense Council. He would sing and things would lighten up. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights has always been inextricably tied to the fight for Black civil rights. This is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with Walter Naegle, an artist and photographer who is the surviving partner of Bayard Rustinthe late American Civil Rights leader. He was a lot of fun, with a great sense of humor, and had a deep appreciation for the arts. Most historians agree that there is evidence of homosexual activity and same-sex love, whether such relationships were accepted or persecuted, in every documented culture.
